Step-by-Step Process
1
Pre-Press (Optional)
320ยฐF for 5 seconds โข Removes moisture and wrinkles
2
Position Transfer
Place transfer face down on garment โข Ensure it's flat and properly aligned
3
Initial Press
320ยฐF for 7-10 seconds โข Apply medium to firm pressure
4
Hot Peel
Wait 2-3 seconds โข Peel backing at 45ยฐ angle while warm
5
Final Press (CRITICAL!)
Cover with parchment paper โข Press for 7-10 seconds โข Ensures durability & reduces shine
Pro Tip: Unlike other DTF companies, we strongly recommend the final press step. Our wash tests show it dramatically improves durability and creates a softer, more professional finish!
๐ Troubleshooting Guide
Transfer Not Sticking / Poor Adhesion
Common causes and solutions:
- Increase temperature by 10-15ยฐF
- Increase pressure to firm/heavy
- Extend press time by 2-3 seconds
- Check if garment was pre-pressed to remove moisture
- Ensure heat press platen is clean and level
Transfer Peeling After Washing
Prevention steps:
- Always do the final press with parchment paper
- Wait 24 hours before first wash
- Ensure proper temperature (320ยฐF minimum)
- Check that you're using medium-firm pressure
- Verify transfer quality - old or improperly stored transfers may fail
Blurry or Faded Design
Check these factors:
- Temperature too high - reduce to 320ยฐF
- Pressing too long - stick to 7-10 seconds
- Transfer shifted during pressing - use heat tape if needed
- Quality of transfer - ensure using fresh transfers
Scorching or Discoloration
Adjust your process:
- Reduce temperature to 310ยฐF
- Use protective sheet (parchment/teflon)
- Reduce press time
- Check fabric content - polyester needs lower temp
Uneven Transfer / Patchy Areas
Ensure even application:
- Check pressure distribution - adjust if uneven
- Avoid pressing over seams, zippers, or buttons
- Use a pressing pillow for uneven surfaces
- Ensure garment is flat with no wrinkles
๐ญ Frequently Asked Questions
What fabrics work best with DTF transfers?
+
DTF transfers work on almost any fabric! Cotton, polyester, blends, and even leather. For best results, use 100% cotton or 50/50 cotton-poly blends. Avoid highly textured fabrics like terry cloth or corduroy as they may affect adhesion.
Can I use a regular iron instead of a heat press?
+
While a heat press gives the best results, you can use a household iron in a pinch. Set to highest heat (no steam!), apply very firm pressure for 15-20 seconds per area, and work in sections. Note that results may be less consistent and durable.
How long do DTF transfers last?
+
With proper application and care, our DTF transfers last 100+ washes! The key is proper pressing (including the final press step) and following care instructions: wash inside out in cold water, avoid fabric softeners, and tumble dry on low or hang dry.
Why is my transfer shiny/glossy?
+
Some shine is normal with DTF, but the final press with parchment paper significantly reduces it. For an even more matte finish, you can do an additional press with a teflon sheet. The shine also naturally decreases after the first wash.
Can I layer DTF transfers?
+
Yes! Apply the first transfer completely (including final press), then position and press the second transfer on top. You may need to reduce temperature slightly (300-310ยฐF) for the second layer to avoid damaging the first.
What's the difference between hot peel and cold peel?
+
Our transfers are HOT PEEL - remove the backing 2-3 seconds after pressing while still warm. Cold peel transfers require waiting 30-60 seconds. Hot peel is faster and gives a softer hand feel. Always check your specific transfer instructions!
How should I store unused transfers?
+
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Keep them flat in a sealed container or zip-lock bag. Properly stored transfers can last 6-12 months. Avoid extreme temperatures and moisture which can degrade the adhesive.
My design has small text/details - any special tips?
+
For intricate designs: ensure very firm pressure, consider increasing press time by 2-3 seconds, use heat-resistant tape to prevent shifting, and be extra careful when peeling. Small details need more adhesive contact to stick properly.
